The Happiness Experiment: Step 1

I’m on a journey to figure out what makes someone a glass-is-half-full kind of person.

What makes someone more positive, happy, and joyful than others?

Are there things we can do – things inside our control – that will lead to happier lives?

Today, I want to share about one strategy I have found that is making a big difference in my life.

That strategy?

Beginning the day differently.

How we start the day determines how the day goes.

Now, of course, this isn’t a universal truth. We can pivot. We are people capable of change. God gave us brains, bodies, and spirits that are pliable, able to bend and flex.

So it’s not a guarantee if you start your day on the wrong foot that the entire day will go downhill from there.

BUT…

Nonetheless, it is true that the first few moments of our days play a pivotal role in the following 23+ hours.

So…what specific changes have I made in the beginning of my day?

Over the next few posts, I’ll share more.

But today, I wanted to start with you 1 small change you can put into practice right now.

Something doable.

Something small.

But something that can make a big impact.

1 Small Change That Can Improve Happiness:

About a month ago, I realized that the first thing I did most mornings was to check my phone. I checked email or Facebook or some other social media platform.

And I realized doing that was not actually making me happy. It was doing the opposite.

That habit was not serving me well.

So I made a change.

I moved my phone charger into another room (because let’s be honest, if my phone is there on the bedside table, I’m probably going to grab it).

Now, I charge my phone in the other room at night.

And I’m much happier for it.

I don’t reach for it in the morning anymore. Now, I reach for my Bible and my gratitude journal.

I don’t wake up thinking about work or what other people are doing. I wake up practicing gratitude and spending time with God.

Want to join me in this happiness experiment?

Step 1 – begin your day differently.

If you grab your phone first thing in the morning like I did, and this habit is not serving you, make a change. Move the phone to another room.

Then let me know if this helps you too!
