A Better Way to View Interruptions in Your Day - Plus a book #giveaway from Becky Kopitzke

“Mom, I love these french fries!” My firstborn, age four at the time, opened wide and popped another fry in her mouth. We were eating dinner at a neighborhood burger joint, complete with old‐fashioned milkshakes and my favorite people seated around the table. It was the stuff memories are made of.

Bad memories.

Halfway through dinner, my one‐year‐old coughed and threw up all over my shirt.

“Where did that come from?!” I sat with my eyes bulging, helpless and stunned while the baby heaved in my arms. My husband scrambled for napkins, and—as if we needed more attention drawn to our appetizing scene—our four‐year‐old started bawling.

“Mom, I don’t like my fries anymore!” she wailed. “That wasn’t supposed to happen!” Tell me about it.

As moms, our days are defined by interruptions. Sick kids, playground injuries, tantrums, scary dreams. We can’t schedule them into convenient time slots, so the Calendar Queen gets peeved. She stews in the pit between what is and what should have been, grumbling all the while—this is not how today was supposed to go!

But who are we to decide that?

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the lord establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

Planning is wise, to a point. The Bible says the wife of noble character “watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:27). God wires many of us to be organized, punctual, and efficient, which are admirable traits indeed.

Yet we must be careful not to presume that our plans are more sensible than God’s.

He is the all‐knowing keeper of time. Surely He has your calendar in the palm of His hand, because His Word says, “all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). Therefore, what to us looks like an interruption, is to God simply staying the course.

The question is, do you trust His course?

Ultimately, interruptions—whether big or small—are a test of our faith in God. Yes, I know it’s maddening when a potty accident derails a playdate, or a fever thwarts your long‐awaited vacation. But God always knows something we don’t know. His plans are always better calculated than ours, and He protects us from countless invisible dangers every single day. That is why, as Christians, we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
